Manos Juntas (means "Hands Joined")
Each Saturday morning for the past 13 years, free medical care has been provided by this clinic in the basement of Epworth Methodist Church at 1901 North Douglas Avenue. Between 80-120 people are evaluated and treated each Saturday by a group of dedicated volunteers. The languages spoken in these encounters include Spanish, Vietnamese, and others. Medications are provided as a part of the service at no cost to the patients. Referrals to specialty care may be arranged. Each year teams of volunteers pack medications and go to Nicaragua to witness the beauty and appreciate the culture. Medical care is provided to people who live in impoverished communities. The work includes partnering to build community buildings, set up temporary clinics, and establishing organizational structure for clinic management. Medical clinics are built or improved and painted in selected communities. Donations to sponsor students in college are distributed and monitored through a public university in Managua. Based upon need and studiousness, selections are made by local faculty. Progress is monitored by these same faculty members so that students graduate at high rates. Manos Juntas has financed about 25 students each year since 1997. The Budget to maintain these operations is about $150,000 each year. Funds are received from tax deductible donations and grants.
